JOURNALISM EXPERIENCE:
German Public TV (ARD): Freelance cultural correspondent for Germany's top-rated, nationwide cultural magazine "Titel, Thesen, Temperamente". (1998 to present): Covered the comeback of Detroit, as well as Gershwin's Centennial. German Public Radio (ARD): Freelance cultural correspondent with an audience in all parts of Germany (1993 to present): Wrote, produced and voiced more than 1,200 short stories (5-10') on more than 200 topics, and about 100 exclusive features (15-120'). Interviewed more than 1,000 artists, including some of the world's most famous. Other highlights include live anchoring from the Metropolitan Opera for direct broadcasts to Germany. Voice of America, German Service (1991-1993): Worked as reporter, news anchor, host and producer for a daily half-hour show. Topics of my coverage included culture, science, politics, sports, and the economy. Delivered an award-winning 20-minute feature on "American politicians and their athletic ambitions." Interviewed politicians, scientists, artists and others. Radio Hamburg, paid internship (1989-1991): Worked as news reporter, host, DJ, and producer for commercial spots. Hosted a weekly one-hour classical music show targeted at newcomers to classical music. Internships with a variety of media (1985-1991) including WCRB Classical Radio, Boston / Voice of America, Current Affairs Division / BILD (leading German tabloid) / ZDF (largest public German TV station), and dpa (leading German press agency) Freelance writing for various German music magazines (1990 to present), and a San Francisco-based classical music web page (1996) OTHER WORKING EXPERIENCE: Voice-over for commercial videos (since 1998), both in German and English. Produced commercial radio spots for The Alexandria Singers that ran on "WBIG Oldies 100" and on WGMS 103.5 (1998, 1999). National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) Presenter for "Datacast" at the annual NAB convention in Las Vegas (1998). Promoted technologies including wireless internet transfer, established international contacts for Datacast. Featured speaker at the international music convention "klassik komm." in Germany, sharing extensive knowledge of American symphony orchestras (1996, 1997). Audience included several hundred leading representatives of European and American music industry. Led a bi-lingual panel discussion (1997) with top orchestra managers (L.A. Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony, Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Munich Philharmonic) The University of Iowa: Worked as recording engineer and as coordinator for international student events (1987 -1989). Organized and promoted two concerts with international students, featuring music from France and China. Hamburg University Hospital (1980 -1982) Civilian service at the psychiatric ward. Worked with patients who had mental illnesses or disabilities, as well as drug addicts and criminal offenders whose mental fitness was being tested. EDUCATION: The University of Iowa, Master's degree in professional journalism (1989) University of Hamburg + Hamburg School of Music: Combined degree in music education, physical education and educational science (1986) OTHER INTERESTS: Extensive travel in Europe and the United States, including a three-month trip throughout the Eastern part of the U.S. (1988), where I attended about 30 major music events. Playing piano; singing and whistling simultaneously (radio and TV appearances in Germany and the U.S.). |
