NY Philharmonic CDs

The oldest orchestra in the United States is doing pioneer work. The New York Philharmonic just released a collection of ten CDs. As for their contents, the CDs are a review of the past, but their way of distribution has a futuristic flavor. It's a compilation of historic radio broadcasts that, with a few exceptions, can only be bought by telephone or over the Internet, with the orchestra itself being the distributor. The CDs feature Arturo Toscanini, Artur Rubinstein, Artur Schnabel and dozens of other famous artists who have different first names. By distributing their archive material themselves rather than passing it on to record stores, the New York Philharmonic is trying new strategies in a struggling CD market. However, potential buyers who are not yet connected to the Internet do not have to miss the collection, as Georg Hirsch reports.
