Domingo's Press Conference

Once every year, America's music journalists have their feast. That's when one of the most-coveted interview partners steps in front of the press to announce the coming season of the Washington Opera. Placido Domingo, by trade a tenor, conductor and artistic director of the opera house in the American capital, could have caused a flood of newspaper articles just by his presence. This year's press conference (on March 5th), however, had indeed both information and entertainment value. Domingo appeared with his looks completely changed, defended himself against accusations of indecency, demonstrated social engagement, confessed artistic limitations and, from a German perspective, he brought good news. Heinz Fricke, the German music director of the Washington Opera, will play a dominant role during the coming season, as Georg Hirsch reports.
