La Jolla

Within 13 years, a small beach town at the Pacific Coast has advanced to become an American chamber music center. La Jolla, which is located outside of San Diego near the Mexican border, has attracted internationally-renowned artists such as Janos Starker, Andre Previn, and Menahem Pressler. Even more impressing than the big names, however, is the way the programs are put together. Besides concerts with traditional classic and contemporary music, visitors have a chance to attend master classes, public discussions and family concerts that yield an entertaining view of life behind the scenes. The increasing importance of the young "Summerfest La Jolla" reflects the increasing popularity of chamber music in the United States which is also highlighted by a growing number of professional American ensembles. Furthermore, La Jolla offers unique features that appeal to tourists and musicians alike. The festival took place from August 4 to 21. Georg Hirsch got a taste of music and the sound of waves.
