Bach Festivals

Just like Germany, so does America observe the 250th anniversary of Johann Sebastian Bach's death with many concerts and festivals. American Bach festivals, however, are not restricted to round anniversaries. Every year, American Bach admirers gather in places where they can delve into Baroque music. Some of these Bach festivals only take a weekend, others last for two weeks, and some spread throughout the year. Very few Bach festivals feature exclusively music by Bach. The repertory heard in Bach Festivals ranges from Bach's contemporaries to avantgarde music or jazz. The largest festivals operate on a budget of more than a million dollars, while others are carried by the enthusiasm of local volunteers who are can be the backbone of a festival. Georg Hirsch visited some Bach festivals.
