American Bach Society

America celebrates Johann Sebastian Bach not only during the 250th anniversary of his death. There are more than a dozen Bach Festivals every year, some happening in big cities like Philadelphia, others in university towns such s Eugene, Oregon, and yet others in rural communities that make a name for themselves with their Bach festival. Those who want an overview can find information at the American Bach Society in New York. It was founded in 1972 as a branch of the German-based "Neue Bachgesellschaft," and in 1988, it became independent. With approximately 350 members, it is considerably smaller than the Neue Bachgesellschaft, and most of its members deal with Bach's music at a professional level. The goal of the American Bach Society is the promotion of Bach's music. Additionally, the Bach Society has made astonishing contributions in the field of Bach research, as Georg Hirsch reports.
